Installed at Trellick Tower, the iconic social housing designed by Goldfinger, this bannister had to rise up and over the existing metal uprights at the turn for maximum space allowance. This is what gives the curve its brutalist “piping” aesthetic. This pleasing design, in keeping with the style of the original building, was created by Archmongers architects.
The curve and rail is made from American Black Walnut, the panels from Scottish Elm. The curve was hand carved with rasps and spokeshaves from complex compound angles, which needed exacting precision to fit onto the original metalwork.
The original metal bannister posts were modified with extended spigots to take the rail. Dome and flat headed brass bolts in period correct British Standard Whitworth threading were sourced.
